About Andean Condor Watching and Guinea Pig Farm 1 Day tour
This day tour is a good option to get out of the traditional tours in Cusco and highly recommended for nature and animal lovers.
In this day tour, you will visit the Chonta Condor viewpoint, located in the Apurimac River Canyon in the Chonta community in the Limatambo district, 70km/43.5 miles and 2-hour drive from the Cusco Imperial city.
Currently, very close to the Cusco city, the Chonta lookout point is the ideal place for the Andean Condor and other birds watching. The Andean condor (Vultur gryphus) is a species of bird of the Cathartidae family, which inhabits the Andes mountain range and is the largest flying bird in the world; weight (15 kg) and maximum wingspan (3.3 m). At the Inca empire time, the Andean Condor was considered sacred and an Andean spiritual messenger.
On the way, also visit the Ayma family’s guinea pig farm. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about the breeding of small domestic animals such as the guinea pig. The guinea pig (Cavia porcellus) is a small animal, but of great flavor and nutritional value. The pre-Inca and Inca cultures included guinea pig meat among their main foods. Today, Peru is the world’s leading producer and consumer of guinea pig meat. Exquisite dishes prepared with guinea pig meat are always present in the menu of the best restaurants in Cusco, Peru.
This Andean Condor Watching and Guinea Pig Farm Full Day tour starts and ends in the Cusco city. We have departures every day of the year with a minimum of 2 people. Recommended from April to November dry season. In rainy season from December to March you will not be able to see the condors.

This tour starts at 8:00am and ends at 19:00 hours in the Cusco city.
We have daily departures and the 12 months of the year. Recommended from April to November dry season.
Tour Plan
Cusco – Guinea Pig Farm - Limatambo - Chonta Canyon viewpoint - Cusco.
To begin this beautiful one day adventure. At 8:00 am. The staff assigned by Machupicchu Andes Tours, professional guide and driver will pick you up at your hotel in Cusco. Then, you will head to the Chonta Canyon viewpoint.
First, 50-minute drive, visit the guinea pig farm of Mr. Mario Ayma and his family in Izcucha, Anta. Mr. Mario will kindly invite you to visit his sheds where he will show you his best guinea pig breeds and explain all his experience and processes with guinea pig breeding.
Then continue your journey enjoying impressive landscapes of pampas full of crops and domestic animals and deep valleys formed by steep mountains and in the distance, you can appreciate the imposing Salkantay snow-capped mountain. At noon, in the Limatambo village enjoy a lunch prepared with local ingredients (local restaurant).
After lunch, continue your journey to the Chonta community and begin the 1.5-hour hike to the Chonta’s Condor watching point (Use of horses, optional).
At 14:00 hours. the Condors begin to return from their daily activities. In the whole extension of the Apurimac River canyon more than 200 condors have been counted, but from the Chonta’s Condor watching point, we usually see 4 to 10 condors.
Finally, we will return to the city of Cusco, arriving at approximately 19:00 hours.
Important. In the rainy season from December – April it is not recommended to do this excursion. Generally, when it rains, Condors aren’t sighted (we don’t guarantee that you will be able to see the Condor), unless we are lucky that day.

To take Cusco Peru Andean Condor bird watching 1 Day Tour:
- you must be in Cusco at least one day in advance.
- Book in advance, as Mr. Mario Ayma is usually on a training trip for guinea pig breeding.
- In Cusco it is recommended to take a coca leaves infusion to avoid altitude sickness.
- Wear appropriate clothing for trekking.
- Don’t do the tour during the rainy season (December – march).
