What is the Inca Trail?
One-Day Inca Trail (The Qhapaq Ñan or Great Inca Trail). The Incas built more than 45 thousand kilometers of roads that articulated and facilitated the better administration of the Inca empire’s territory. This great royal road was built with stones and mud mortars, tunnels, vegetable fiber bridges (Qeswachaca), resting places (Wayranas and tambos) and others. It crossed almost the entire South American continent joining the current countries of Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador and Colombia. The starting point was the great temple of the sun (Qorikancha = Golden enclosure) located in the Cusco city center, the Inca empire capital.
Most of this trail is still in use today. The royal road that linked Cusco, the capital of the empire with Machu Picchu, today has become very popular all over the world for trekking enthusiasts. Every year, thousands of trekking enthusiasts hike the Full-Day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.
Sharing roads with Andean villages, under constellations that touch eternity.
