If you’re on the hunt for an unforgettable trek that combines both rugged high-altitude mountain ranges with lush jungle trails, ancient Inca ruins, and modern comforts, then you’re in luck.
In five incredible days, you’ll hike through cloud forests, sleep in glass-domed cabins, pod hanging off a cliff, sip fresh-roasted coffee on a mountainside coffee plantation, and wake up to views of the Salkantay glacier. This trek is perfect for travelers who want a big adventure with a few well-earned modern comforts along the way.
The Classic Salkantay Trek is the most popular alternative to the Classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu and for good reason. National Geographic named it one of the “20 Most Extreme, Hair-Raising, Legendary Adventures on the Planet.”
Over five days and four nights, you’ll hike from the Salkantay Mountain (6,271 m / 20,569 ft) to cloud forest and the majestic citadel of Machu Picchu (2,430 m / 7,972 ft), taking in some of the most breathtaking scenery in the Peruvian Andes.
Unlike the Classic Inca Trail, the Salkantay route offers a more varied experience. You’ll cross high mountain passes, descend into rainforest valleys, and pass through working farms before reaching the amazing Machu Picchu.
What makes this trek especially memorable, though, is the comfort along the way. You’ll stay in mountain cabins with sky view at Soraypampa for night one, sleep in a pod hanging off a cliff in Colpapampa overlooking the Santa Teresa Valley for night two, a deluxe night in a dome in Lucmabamba for night three, and a hotel in Aguas Calientes, all with stunning views and modern amenities.
Along the route, you’ll also enjoy a hands-on coffee tour and visit the remote Llactapata Inca ruins, where you’ll catch your first distant glimpse of Machu Picchu across the valley.
Your adventure starts in Cusco with a mandatory pre-trek briefing, where you’ll meet your guide and fellow trekkers.
You’ll go over the route, review packing tips, and ask any last-minute questions. The next morning, you’re off to the trailhead in Challacancha..
Your time spent on the Classic Salkantay Trail will be packed with unforgettable highlights. You’ll sleep in scenic mountain cabins, pod hanging off a cliff and glass-domed lodges surrounded by unforgettable views of the Andes. Along the way, you’ll visit the Humantay Lake and cross the Salkantay Pass at 4,630 meters.
The route takes you through a dramatic transition of landscapes, from snow-covered peaks to lush cloud forest. You’ll also enjoy a coffee experience at a local coffee plantation, explore less frequented Llactapata Inca ruins, and arrive at Machu Picchu by train.
Get ready to explore a lesser-traveled route that climbs to a thrilling 4,650 meters at Salkantay Pass before descending through cloud forest and jungle on the way to Machu Picchu. It’s remote, challenging, and packed with jaw-dropping scenery. It’s one trek you’ll certainly never forget!
After pickup from your hotel in Cusco, we’ll drive to Challacancha, the official starting point of our trek. From here, we’ll hike to Soraypampa (3,900 m/ 12,795 ft.). After settling in, we’ll visit the breathtaking Humantay Lake, known for its vibrant turquoise waters beneath a glacial peak.
We return to camp for dinner and spend the night in comfortable cabins with sky view at Soraypampa under the mountain stars.
After a warm cup of coca tea, you’ll get ready for the most challenging and rewarding day of the trek. The hike begins with an ascent from Soraypampa to the Salkantay Pass (4,630 m/ 15,190 ft.), the highest point on the route, where you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking sights of snow-capped peaks.
From there, you’ll descend through high-altitude valleys and shifting ecosystems as the landscape transforms into a lush cloud forest. Tonight, you’ll rest comfortably in a pod hanging off a cliff in Colpapampa (2,950 m/ 9,678 ft.), where a cozy pod lodge with hot showers and proper beds awaits.
We follow the Santa Teresa River through tropical rainforest, passing waterfalls, orchids, and fruit trees along the way.
After lunch in Lucmabamba, we’ll enjoy a hands-on coffee experience, picking, roasting, and brewing your own cup straight from the farm.
Tonight, we’ll relax in domes at Lucmabamba, fully equipped with hot showers, a dining area, and other comfortable amenities.
On our final day, after breakfast, we’ll take an early bus up to Machu Picchu for a guided tour of the citadel.
If you’ve secured a permit (permit not included in the trip), you may also climb Huayna Picchu for panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and ruins.
After exploring the site, we’ll return by bus to Aguas Calientes, board the train to Ollantaytambo, and finish the journey with a private transfer back to your hotel in Cusco.
Sharing roads with Andean villages, under constellations that touch eternity.
